You may not have had a chance to hear the story of ‘The Basketball Cop’, Bobby White.  The police officer, from the Gainsville, Florida, was called out following reports of a group of teenagers causing a disturbance in a local neighbourhood.  When Bobby arrived, he saw an opportunity to build respect with the local community and got involved with a game of street basketball before reminding them of their need to keep disturbance to a minimum.  As he left, Bobby promised he would be back with ‘backup’ to play some more basketball with them.

When he returned, he brought a celebrity in the form of Shaquille O’Neal (former NBA star).  After playing some basketball, Shaq made the boys make some promises:-

” I will become whatever I want to be”

” I will be a leader and not a follower”

” I will respect my peers, my elders, and especially my parents..”

The respect shown by; Police Officer Bobby White in engaging with this group, the group by accepting the offer of friendship shown by the police, and Shaquille O’Neal in responding to a community need demonstrates the kind of impact we want our Core Values to have on those around us.
